✨ Preparing for Family Advent: A Season of Waiting, Wonder, and Worship

“Every single creature is full of God and is a book about God.
Every creature is a word of God. If I spend enough time with the tiniest creature, even a caterpillar, I would never have to prepare a sermon. So full of God is every creature.”
Meister Eckhart

As we enter the Advent season, we’re invited to slow down, prepare, and reflect—on what was, what is, and what is to come. It’s a time to prepare not only our homes but also our hearts for the hope we find in the birth of our Savior.

🌿 What Is Advent?

Advent, meaning “coming,” is the four-week season leading up to Christmas—a time of waiting, longing, and hopeful expectation. Traditionally, each week centers around a theme: hope, peace, joy, and love.

While our culture often rushes toward Christmas morning, Advent invites us to move gently and thoughtfully, savoring each small moment as a way of preparing room for Christ in our hearts and homes.

🕯 How to Prepare for Advent

Gather Your Candles
Create a simple Advent wreath with four candles—three purple and one pink—to represent the weeks of Advent, plus an optional white candle in the center for Christmas Day. Light one candle each week as you read Scripture or pray together, symbolizing the growing light of Christ coming into the world. You can make the candleholders out of air dry clay, or even create an air dry spiral Advent wreath.

Choose a Rhythm of Reflection
Set aside a few minutes each morning or evening for quiet reflection. Read a chapter from All Creation Waits, followed by a scriptural devotion from Unearthing Wonder. Each day, we open a window into the lives of wild animals and how they adapt as darkness and cold descend. Their patience and resilience remind us that the dark is never the end—it’s how new beginnings come.

Each day during Advent, your family can:

  • Read the suggested passage from All Creation Waits

  • Reflect on the accompanying Scripture from Unearthing Wonder

  • Enjoy a hands-on activity or craft

  • Sing a hymn or Christmas carol together

🌲 A Season for Wonder and Togetherness

This Advent, let’s create space for rest, strengthened relationships, and deeper joy. Set aside the hustle, light your candles, and gather close.

Whether you’re reading by candlelight or crafting together, may these small, sacred rhythms draw your family nearer to one another—and to the One who came to bring light to the world.
