Summer Reading for Moms from the Restoration Home Podcast
Growing up, Summers never meant the end of school, but they did offer a chance to slow down, play more, spend time by the lakes and rivers that abound in the Northern California Mountains and read! Reading great books that instructed and inspired was core to my childhood and remains core to my adult life. While growing up and getting busier has meant more material consumed via podcasts than by books, books still bring me the greatest joy.
That love of great books is core to the Peaceful Press and my mom’s education philosophy. It has translated into curating great authors as guests on the Restoration Home Podcast. This includes guests such as Sally Clarkson, who is a giant in the homeschool community and a prolific author, to new authors releasing their first books.
The following is a list of great summer reads gathered from our podcast guests. There are books to inspire your Autumn homeschool planning, books to help you grow and heal emotionally, books that inspire your spiritual growth and discipline, and books on parenting, family vision, healthy crunchy ideals, and curating a more beautiful home.
For the moms who are already dreaming about the new homeschool year:
Modern Miss Mason by Leah Boden
Leah Boden is a beloved friend and a return guest of the podcast. Her episode “Stewarding a Charlotte Mason Education” is a great introduction to Charlotte Mason’s educational philosophy. If you’re looking for a more detailed breakdown on why Charlotte Mason sets your children up for success, check out Jennifer’s solo episode, “A Charlotte Mason Education”.
If you’re looking for a reset on your parenting:
The episode with Amy Nyvall was a beautiful reminder that we can pursue connection and attunement without sacrificing standards. The correlating book that comes highly recommended is Simplicity Parenting by Kim John Payne.
For additional parenting books:
M is for Mama by Abbie Halberstadt; Check out the episode “How to Do Hard” with Abbie Halberstadt.
Raising Boys to Men by Durenda Wilson; her conversation with Jennifer can be found here.
The Mission of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson; Sally Clarkson’s episode "Mothers Who Never Stop” is a must listen to as well.
To inspire your homemaking:
Holy Hygge by Jamie Erickson; Episode 12
Julia Ubbengas
by Sarah Boyd is another great book about stewarding homes and hearts. Her episode with Jennifer can be found here.
Books to help you grow and heal:
Stronger than Stress: 10 Spiritual Practices to Win the Battle of Overwhelm by Barb Roose; check out our episode Overcoming Stress with Barb Roose.
The Joy Switch: How Your Brain's Secret Circuit Affects Your Relationships-And How You Can Activate It by Chris Coursey. For a beautiful conversation on choosing joy, check out Episode 104 with Chris and Jen Coursey.
John Eldredge is one of our favourite authors and inspirations in our spiritual journey. We had the privilege of hosting him on our podcast; you can find the episode Intimacy with God here. His newest book, Experience Jesus Really, is a must-read. If you’re looking for daily devotionals, the Pause App offers scripture-based guided meditation that will help you pause and reconnect with Jesus. We can read all the best books in the world, practice, prep, and plan, but at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is Jesus and time in His presence.
Last but not least, Jennifer’s Mothering By the Book is a heartwarming, heart-healing book for mothers at every stage of motherhood.
