Book:
Read Hello Harvest Moon by Ralph Fletcher.
An additional book that discusses moons and seasons that you might like to read is When the Moon is Full by Mary Azarian.
Phonics:
Practice sounding out the word moon. Use the moon card prinatables to build the word moon. Think of as many “oo” words as you can that sounds like “moon”, such as “soon”, “room”, “zoo”, “broom” and “noon”.
Art:
Create a full moon mobile with a styrofoam ball and the star printable sheet. Before you begin you will need to make up a moon texture mixture by combining two parts white paint with one part white flour. Set aside. Using the end of your paint brush, gently poke some holes in your moon to represent craters. Next, take the texture paint and cover the moon. It looks even more realistic if the coating is uneven and messy. Allow the ball to dry for several hours or overnight.
When your “moon” has dried, begin working on your “stars”. You will need to cut them out, color them, a punch a hole at the top of each star. When you are finished, thread some string through each hole for hanging. You can attach each star with a tack or nail to the styrofoam moon. You can also attach some thread to the top of your moon for hanging.
Fine Motor Skills:
Try to line up your moon phase cards in order. You can use your example sheet to see how well you have done.
Large Motor Skills:
Play hide and seek in a wooded area. You can think about the words you read in today’s story about the harvest moon and hide and seek. What do you think “cloaked in moon shadow” means?
Practical Skills:
Make harvest chili to share together. See recipe.
