Why Morning Time Is the Heart of Our Homeschool (and How to Keep It Simple)

"Morning Time" has become one of the most beloved traditions in the homeschooling world. Cindy Rollins first popularized the term in her book Mere Motherhood and many mothers have applied it in their own homes in some form.

You may have also heard it called:

• Morning Basket

• Circle Time

Whatever you call it, the idea is the same: setting aside a dedicated time each day to gather as a family around beautiful books, rich ideas, and meaningful conversation.

For our family, Morning Time has been the heartbeat of our homeschool.

How Our Morning Time Began

When we first began homeschooling nearly 30 years ago, I loved Charlotte Mason's philosophy but found myself skipping many of the "short subjects" she recommended—poetry, hymn study, scripture memory, folk songs, artist study, and nature study because I worried about covering the basics of math, grammar, and history.

What I found however, was that this gathered time where we read aloud together, sang, read the Bible, and reviewed memory work was our best time of the day. 

It wasn't just a teaching time, but also a thermostat that helped me measure the quality of our connection as a family. If my children could join morning time peacefully, I knew we were on the right track, but if they struggled to listen and attend, or were quarreling, it meant we needed more togetherness, not less.

Morning Time Has Grown Alongside Our Family

Like every homeschool rhythm, Morning Time has evolved over the years.

When my children were little, we gathered first thing each morning to recite poetry, review the calendar, read Scripture, and enjoy picture books together.

As they grew older, our conversations deepened.

We added history readings, narration, geography, composer study, missionary stories, current events, and family discussions.

Some seasons we met around the breakfast table.

Other years we gathered on the couch.
