Many homeschool moms fight the winter doldrums by starting to plan their next homeschool year, but when we plan without taking time to understand, we often end up frazzled and overwhelmed by too many tedious workbooks.
Instead, take some time to read about homeschool philosophy to understand your reasons for homeschooling, and then make better homeschool plans.
A few books that I've been inspired by lately include;
Teaching From Rest by Sarah Mackenzie invites us to slow down so we can savor the journey. A favorite quote from this book is, “What matters is that we seek to imitate Christ. That we order our loves so that our hearts better reflect His.”
The Anxious Generation from Jonathan Haidt remind us not to focus on internet based curriculum at the expense of in person relationships and to guard our children's mental and physical wellness. A favorite quote is “The phone-based life makes it difficult for people to be fully present with others when they are with others, and to sit silently with themselves when they are alone.”
Balanced and Barefoot by occupational therapist Angela Hanscom can help us understand why motor skills are an important component of an early childhood education (we include them in the Peaceful Preschool and Nourishing Nature Kindergarten) and how playing outdoors is one of the best ways to incorporate these experiences.
A favorite quote is, “Due to less time spent developing strength, coordination, and balance, children are becoming more and more unsafe and accident-prone. In order for children to develop any skills of the mind or body, they must practice them daily, ideally through meaningful play experiences.”
