Reset Your Homeschool 7 Daily Decisions to Make Now

There’s something about a new year that makes everything feel possible again but preparation is key, and you can reset your homeschool with these 7 daily decisions to make now.

If you’re anything like me, the transition into January feels like an invitation to pause, breathe, and make a few intentional choices that set the tone for the months ahead.
And one thing I’ve learned after years of homeschooling?
The decisions you make before the new year begins can save you hundreds of decisions during the new year.

Tiny choices now = peaceful routines later.

These seven simple decisions will help you step into January with confidence, clarity, and a homeschool rhythm that feels life-giving for everyone.

1. Decide Your Snack Plan

It’s amazing how quickly food can derail a homeschool day.
Kids want seven snacks by 9:30 AM, and before you know it, the whole house feels chaotic.

A simple reset: decide both when snack time is and what’s offered.

At our house, snack is at 10:00 AM on school days. And it’s always something simple: fruit, nuts, cheese, or toast.

When kids know what to expect, decision fatigue disappears, for you and them.

2. Decide When Learning Will Start Each Day

Will you start right after breakfast?
 At a set time?
After a 30-minute free-play block?
Choose a start time (or a start cue) and stick gently to it.

When kids know the rhythm, they transition more easily and argue less.
Consistency is your friend especially during the cozy winter months.

3. Decide Whether You’re Checking Time-Based or Lesson-Based Boxes

This one can transform your entire school year.

Some kids thrive on “One math lesson a day.”
Others do better with “Work for 30 focused minutes.” Both work beautifully.
The question is simply: What serves your family best in this season?

A January reset is the perfect time to reevaluate.

4. Decide What “Done” Looks Like

Every homeschool needs a finish line.
Not a rigid one but a clear one. For some families, school is done when the checklist is complete.
For others, it’s done at a certain time each afternoon.

Your kids will settle into routines so much easier when “done” is not vague, shifting, or confusing. Choose it now, and January becomes smooth and simplified.

5. Decide What Happens When Work Isn’t Done

This is the least fun decision… but one of the most important. If a child consistently doesn’t finish work, what happens?

Natural consequences help kids learn real-life responsibility:

  • finishing work before play
  • finishing during a quiet afternoon block
  • losing screen time
  • revisiting expectations together

Choose a gentle, consistent response now so you’re not making that decision in the heat of the moment later.

6. Decide Your Screen Time Boundaries

Screens are often the biggest challenge during long winter days.

Set parameters now so January doesn’t feel like a constant negotiation:

  • No screens before 3 PM
  • One episode on weekend mornings
  • Phone only after schoolwork is done
  • Screens earned through helpful chores
  • Devices docked during meals and evenings

Clear expectations = calmer homes.

7. Decide What You Want to Protect This Year

This is the heart of your homeschool.

Before the new year begins, ask yourself:
What do I want more of?
What do I want less of?
What matters most in this season?

Maybe it’s…

more read-aloud time

more slow mornings

more nature walks

more peace

more connection

more margin

more delight

Choosing what to protect shapes every other decision you make.
