Sick Day Homeschooling

Sick Day Homeschooling

Homeschool days where mama and children aren't feeling well is a normal part of life, but sick days don't have to equal learning loss.

Here are a few tips to create low-key learning for these imperfect days.

Listen to audiobooks.

If mama is also feeling under the weather, reading aloud can be taxing. On those days, switch to audio books to keep up with your chapters while recovering. (#amazonad)

Sip tea

The Peaceful Press curriculum cookbook includes several recipes for healing teas. Well children can mix up simple concoctions (honey, lemon, and turmeric, or elderberries with cinnamon and honey) while mama supervises the water heating. Then sip on that while you listen to an audiobook.

Watch a documentary or history film

My high school son and I have been watching World War 2 films, and when my children were younger we loved watching the Moody Science videos, documentaries about Shackleton's Endurance and other expeditions (perfect for Kind Kingdom families!), as well as Bob Ross painting videos. We also watched plenty of Bear Grylls, Crocodile Hunter, and other nature-themed shows on our sick days. My favorite now is the Country Life Vlog, where an older couple in Azerbaijan cooks massive amounts of food over a wood-fired stove. Anything you want to learn about has a video on YouTube, and while you might need to preview it, you can learn a lot about the subjects you are studying by watching a few videos.

Sit outside

If the weather allows, sit outside with your children and soak up some sunshine. Nature sounds have been proven to release serotonin, and morning light is the perfect red light therapy. Well children can nature journal what they observe, or even take pictures or videos of the surroundings.

Talk about nutrition

Sick days often follow celebrations where desserts have been plentiful, and sleep scarce. Use the sick day to talk to your children about vitamins and minerals, about nourishing foods vs depleting foods, so they can make better choices at the next party. Take some vitamin C or eat citrus fruits and have your healthy children make an infographic or poster about what to eat when you feel the flu coming on.
