Summer Habits for Homeschool Families
Summer often feels like a deep breath after a long homeschool year, but having summer habits for your homeschool family can help you keep healthy rhythms going for an easier back to school transition in the fall. Sure, the alarms soften, the schedules loosen, and the days stretch out with more room for rest, creativity, and connection. But just because it’s summer doesn’t mean the learning stops.
In many ways, summer is the perfect time to gently nurture the habits that help our homes flourish. Without the pressure of a full academic schedule, we can focus on the rhythms that build peace, joy, and connection in our families.
Instead of striving for perfection, think of summer as a season for cultivating simple, life-giving habits.
Gentle Summer Habits We’re Loving
📖 Start the Day with Scripture
Even one verse can shape the atmosphere of your morning. Reading the Bible together reminds us that our peace does not come from perfect circumstances, but from abiding in truth.
Some mornings we read a Psalm, a Proverb, or simply take turns praying together before breakfast. These little moments become anchors for the whole day.
🛏️ Make the Bed
A tiny act of order can shift the tone of a room—and even a child’s mindset. Making the bed teaches stewardship and creates a sense of calm before the day begins.
Small habits matter because they shape the culture of our homes over time.
🎨 Do Something Creative
Summer is a beautiful time to awaken creativity again. Paint, write poetry, build forts, bake bread, watercolor at the kitchen table, or make nature crafts from treasures gathered outside.
Creativity helps children process emotions, develop confidence, and delight in the world around them.
🧹 Improve Your Surroundings
Pull a weed. Organize a shelf. Sweep the porch. Light a candle at dinner.
Teaching children to care for their surroundings helps them see the home as a place worth tending and loving.

🕊️ Our Simple Summer Morning Rhythm
One of the sweetest parts of summer is that our morning rhythm becomes slower and more relational. We focus less on checking boxes and more on connection.
📖 1. Poetry, Scripture, or Prayer
We often begin with a poem, hymn, Scripture reading, or short prayer time together.
The Nature Book Flood includes weekly folk songs, poems, and Bible copywork that fit beautifully into a peaceful summer morning rhythm.
These simple practices help center our hearts before the busyness of the day begins.
🌊 2. Read-Aloud Time
Summer is a wonderful opportunity to finish books you didn’t get to during the school year or dive into stories that inspire wonder and adventure.
Some favorite summer read-alouds include:
- The Trumpet of the Swan
- Swallows and Amazons
- Summer of the Monkeys
You might also check out the beloved picture books from The Nourishing Nature Kindergarten Summer Bundle. The conversations that come from shared stories often become some of the richest learning moments of all.
📝 3. Simplified Language Arts
During the summer, I still like to keep handwriting and memory work lightly woven into our days with these simple ideas:
- Finish missed pages from their Peaceful Press student sheets
- Write summer bucket lists
- Copy favorite poems
- Put on a summer play or pageant (our Fourth of July Book Flood has great content for a history pageant)
- Practice memory verses from the Nature Book Flood.
It doesn’t need to be complicated to be meaningful.
🌼 4. Nature Walks & Summer Projects
After our quiet morning time, we usually transition into free play, outdoor adventures, or hands-on projects.
Some favorite summer activities through the years have included:
- Gardening
- Canning peaches
- Watercolor painting
- Visiting swimming holes
- Dipping beeswax candles
- Raising tadpoles
- Berry picking
- Nature walks and river outings
These simple experiences create lasting memories and help children fall in love with the beauty of the world around them.
The Nature Book Flood and Nourishing Nature Summer Bundle are both filled with projects and ideas designed to help families stay connected and inspired throughout the summer months.

Nourishing Yourself Too
As mothers, it’s easy to focus entirely on our children while neglecting our own hearts and minds. But peaceful homes are often built by mothers who are also being nourished.
Summer can be a wonderful season to read an encouraging motherhood or homeschooling book, listen to a podcast while folding laundry, or slowly work through a course that inspires you.
A few favorite books for summer homeschool encouragement:
- The Inspired Homeschool - My new book about 10 homeschoolers from history and the principles that nurtured their genius.
- Habits for a Sacred Home - Create a vision and values for your family based on inspiring Christian women.
- Mothering by the Book -My first book highlights how to overcome fear and live with joy.
- Mere Motherhood - I loved Cindy Rollins account of homeschooling 9 children with the CM method.
- The Charlotte Mason Companion -This was a first CM book I read, and an inspiring overview of the method.
- In Vital Harmony- I love this comprehensive overview of Charlotte Mason philosophy.
- For the Family's Sake- This book highlights great habits for Christian families.
- Montessori in the Classroom- I loved this book for it's insight into how young children learn, and what they are capable of.

Rooted in Joy This Summer ☀️
These little rhythms may seem small, but they create stability and joy in the midst of the beautiful freedom of summer.
A happy home is often built through ordinary moments repeated faithfully:
morning prayers, shared books, slow walks, creative afternoons, tidy rooms, eye contact, laughter, and rest.
And these gentle summer habits can become a beautiful bridge into the homeschool year ahead.
