Thanksgiving and the Books We Love

Thanksgiving and the Books We Love

Enjoying hot spiced apple cider and curling up in blankets is one of the most delightful upsides to shorter days. It’s the time that for 1000’s of years was traditionally used to create and pass down oral tradition, and for many cultures Autumn involved a celebration of thanks-giving for a successful harvest and the continued survival of ones’ family, tribe, village, and country.
As Americans, November is when we celebrate and give thanks for the years “harvest. Our harvest is different from our agrarian ancestors. Now, we give thanks for a year of work, for the cold and hot water that for a full year has continually come running from our pipes, for the infrastructure that takes our sewer and its diseases far from our place of dwelling, and for the mass of diligent, faithful workers that keep our grocery stores well stocked.

One thing we can keep doing, much like our forebears, is passing down the stories of our histories. And as Americans, a thread of our American history is the pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock and were able to survive due to the gracious generosity of the Native Americans who welcomed them.

If you’re looking for books, this is a beautiful list of our favorite Thanksgiving books to read aloud and remember through. While you’re reading, is there a family in your community that you can extend the same generosity to in this season, as the Native Americans did to the Pilgrims?

Our New England Guide includes wonderful lesson plans for celebrating Thanksgiving and if you’re looking for more ways to slow down over the Holiday Season don’t forget to check out our Christmas Guides Vol 1 and Vol 2, and Unearthing Wonder for a Gospel centered Advent Celebration for young children and families.
